Description

The Director of Ministry with Youth, working under the direction of the Senior Pastor and collaboratively with the Director of Ministry with Children and Families, is responsible for nurturing the spiritual growth, leadership development, and sense of belonging of youth in grades 7–12 who participate in activities of Mission Hills United Church of Christ.

This position cultivates a safe, inclusive, and engaging youth ministry grounded in progressive Christian faith, justice, and relationship. The Director supports youth as they explore spirituality, community, service, and their own voices within the life of the church.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a welcoming and engaging youth ministry shaped by the interests, questions, and lived experiences of the youth themselves.
    • Design and facilitate gatherings that integrate spiritual formation, community building, and social justice.
    • Lead a Sunday morning youth group three Sundays per month, including confirmation classes every other year.
    • Plan and lead a monthly Friday evening youth gathering that intentionally includes youth beyond the congregation.
    • Organize a monthly outreach or service activity, often on a Saturday.
    • Invite and support youth participation in worship and congregational life.
    • Encourage youth to take part in All-Generations church activities, including the annual all-church weekend at Pilgrim Pines.
    • Plan and lead an annual trip to Tijuana to build a house, as well as promote involvement in other service and justice opportunities.
    • Build connections with other United Church of Christ congregations and community organizations.
    • Advocate for youth, empowering them to lead, speak, and participate in decision-making.
    • Ensure the physical, emotional, and spiritual safety of all youth in church-sponsored activities, following Mission Hills United Church of Christ’s Safe Church Policies and other best practices, and maintaining an environment of inclusion for all youth.
    • Recruit and support a team of adult volunteers where feel equipped and supported.
    • Maintain clear and timely communication with parents, caregivers, and church leadership.
    • Commit to continuing education through reading, training, and engagement with best practices in youth ministry.
    • Meet regularly with the Senior Pastor for support and planning.

Desired Skills

  • A calling to work with youth and experience leading church-based youth groups.
    • Teaching experience, either professionally or as a volunteer.
    • Be able to relate to this generation of youth navigating a world in which church participation is suspect by their peers.
    • Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills appropriate to a part-time role.
    • Ability to problem-solve.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with the Senior Pastor and Director of Ministry with Children and Families.
    • Commitment to adhere to Mission Hills United Church of Christ’s Safe Church Policies and to follow all applicable laws, including Mandatory Reporter Training.
    • Live Scan background check and references required.
