Job Summary

Description

The Director of Youth Ministries coordinates and enthusiastically participates in relational ministry and programming for youth (grades 6-12+) and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Be an important and enthusiastic member of our staff
  • Direct the “big picture” of youth ministry at Calvary
  • Oversee the budgeting process and expenditures of Youth ministries
  • Seek ways to involve youth in the larger life of the church.
  • Be a caring, positive, and non-judgmental mentor for Calvary youth
  • Foster leadership opportunities for youth and listen to youth input
  • Maintain connections with youth after high school graduation and serve as a touch point for them when then visit home from college.
  • Coordinate and empower lay leaders in all regular youth programming based on need and interest, including but not limited to the following:
    • Sunday morning Sunday school
    • Sunday afternoon Confirmation (seasonal)
    • Sunday night youth group (dinner, games, worship, small groups)
    • Attend Sunday evening choir and music ministry activities with youth
    • Annual Youth Sunday, in which the youth lead the Sunday morning worship
    • Annual Youth Auction fundraiser (luncheon/auction after youth sunday)
  • Organize youth basketball teams
  • Plan regular annual retreats such as:
    • Middle School Retreat (usually in the fall)
    • Senior high retreat (usually in the fall or spring)
    • Ski Trip or other activity-based fellowship trip (usually in the winter)
    • Choir Tour (1 week in the summer, coordinated with music minister)
    • Appalachia Service Project (ASP) (this is a pillar of our youth group experience)

Desired Skills

  • A personal and spiritual calling for service in God’s church in youth ministry
  • Familiarity with United Methodist theology
  • Some experience in, or demonstrated interested in, working with youth
  • Enthusiasm, energy, and a “youthful spirit,” able to keep up with teenagers
  • Excellent communication skills, able to both to build relationships with teens and effectively communicate with in a way that makes programs run smoothly
  • Highly organized, with the ability to plan large events, manage a calendar, and coordinate volunteers
  • Able to collaborate and serve on a team; an upbeat, positive, and helpful member of Calvary’s staff, able to contribute to the mission of Calvary as a whole and work together with staff to meet the needs of the congregation
  • Background devoid of any child or youth related offenses, and a clean pre-employment drug screen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Member of a United Methodist Church
  • Youth Ministry Certification
  • Bachelor Degree
  • 2+ years of experience working with youth

Salary: negotiable based on education and experience; includes health care, retirement benefits, and discounted child care at Calvary Young Children’s School

Schedule: Full-time salaried position (~40h per week) with flexibility to meet program needs.
