Description

At Gary Church, our mission through Christ is to grow in joyful faith and serve all in love. The Director of Youth Ministry (DYM) provides leadership in ministry serving the young people of Gary Church and the broader Wheaton area, building meaningful relationships with and developing a welcoming community for students in grades 6 through 12.

Working in collaboration with parents, volunteers, staff and the congregation, the DYM creates formal and informal opportunities for youth to feel connected, grow in their faith as followers of Jesus Christ and actively participate in the life of the church. The Director reports to the Senior Pastor.

The Director of Youth Ministry requires a positive attitude and an outgoing nature, friendliness, enthusiasm, a sense of humor, tenaciousness, determination, a commitment to youth and the ability to relate to pre-teens, teens and their families.

Responsibilities

Ministry Duties

  • Cultivate meaningful relationships and an environment of belonging for all students
  • Provide learning opportunities rooted in scripture, connection and service
  • Plan and implement programs, events and activities to meaningfully engage youth
  • Integrate youth ministry into the overall church life, mission and programs
  • Cultivate a safe space for students to explore their faith, questions and doubts
  • Manage youth group dynamics and student behavior effectively, ensuring a welcoming environment where all youth feel safe and respected
  • Provide pastoral care and spiritual guidance for youth
  • Build trusted partnerships with parents by maintaining open communication and providing encouragement and resources to be a spiritual influence in their children’s lives.
  • Model and give witness to your personal faith

Leadership Duties

  • Cultivate engagement in student discipleship across the congregation
  • Recruit, train and support adult volunteers and mentors working with youth and serving on Youth Council
  • Maintain youth budget, coordinating additional fundraising efforts as needed
  • Partner with Gary Kids and families, as well as young adult ministry to strengthen connection and continuity of ministry throughout lives of young people (as appropriate)
  • Participate in church-related youth programming within the community, District and Conference (as appropriate)

Communication Duties

  • Maintain regular communication with students, parents and volunteers so they are well-informed, connected and engaged
  • Work with Communications team to create press and posts for youth ministry in Chimes newsletter, enews and social media
  • Collaborate with staff to support shared vision and ministry direction

Desired Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required with experience in youth ministry preferred
  • Passion for helping students grow in their faith
  • Excellent communications and relationship-building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with youth, parents, volunteers and staff
  • Ability to navigate challenging conversations with wisdom and grace
  • Strong organizational and administrative abilities
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with staff and volunteer teams
  • Empathic belief in the mission of Gary Church
  • Confidentiality, sensitivity, and discretion essential
  • Evening and weekend work required with flexible adjustments to scheduling

Salary

$40,000-$45,000
