Weekly Summaries

Week 1 – Holiness is: Active

Students will engage in a lesson on holiness, exploring its true meaning beyond the surface-level expectations of perfection. They will wrestle with the concept of holiness, reflecting on their personal definitions of it and considering how culture, scripture, and Jesus’ example influence their understanding. The goal is for students to walk away with a more nuanced view of holiness, not as a standard of perfection but as an ongoing process of transformation and action. The hope is that they leave with a deeper understanding of how holiness isn’t about impressing others but living authentically, reflecting God’s love in everyday life.

Scripture – James 1:22-25

Week 2 – Holiness is: Caring

Holiness is more than a personal pursuit—it is an outward expression of God’s love through justice, mercy, forgiveness, and integrity. In a world that often encourages division and self-interest, James challenges believers to live a life set apart, not by isolation, but by radical love and compassion. Students will reflect upon the claim that true holiness means caring for the most vulnerable—those on the margins of society—while keeping hearts unstained by bitterness or hate. Students will be challenged to see holiness, not as rigid moral perfection but as a transformative way of living—one that requires both standing for what is right and loving those who resist it.

Scripture – James 1:26-27

Week 3 – Holiness is: Being Wise

If holiness is an attribute of God, how do we access it? Students are at a stage in life where they are actively developing their identities, trying to make sense of the messages they receive from all around them about who they are. This session is an invitation to embrace the transformative power of God’s wisdom as students navigate their identities, thoughts, and actions. By seeking God’s wisdom, students can learn to ground their sense of self in God’s truth, leading them to reflect God’s holiness in how they live, speak, and interact with others.

Scripture – James 1:6-8

Week 4 – Holiness is: How We Speak

Students will explore the power of words and how they reflect the holiness God calls us to live out. Then, they will reflect on the difference between destructive speech and speech that channels righteous anger for justice and healing. They’ll look at how holiness involves speaking with wisdom, integrity, and love, even in moments of strong emotion. By the end of the lesson, they’ll be challenged to think about their own speech—how it builds up or tears down—and how they can use their words to reflect God’s love, advocate for justice, and live a holy life.

Scripture – Luke 6:45, James 1:26, James 3:5-12
