Explore our call to care for God’s creation. From the very beginning, God made the world and called it good. Over time, our actions—and our inaction—have caused harm to the earth and everything in it. We’ve forgotten the goodness and beauty of creation. As a result, our choices have harmed the climate in ways that impact all living things: plants, animals, and humans. Though climate change affects everyone, those who suffer the most are often the ones with the least power—the poor, marginalized, and voiceless. However, God cares deeply about all of creation and calls us to care for it as well. It’s a care characterized by loving our neighbors and following God’s call to justice right here and right now.

In week one, we focus on the goodness of God’s creation, especially the way God created everything to live in harmony with God. Yet, the story tells us that humanity extorted nature for its gain, ultimately causing us to forget the goodness of creation and this world. As a group, you will read through Genesis Chapter One in a “Call and Response” style, reflecting on the goodness with which God created the world. The goal is for students to understand humanity’s role in impacting the environment and how actions can directly affect climate and God’s creation.
Scripture – Genesis 3:1-19
Dive into the urgent realities of climate change through a theological lens that affirms God’s love for all of creation, human and non-human alike. Youth will be guided through both the enormity and intimacy of the climate crisis, helping them to see that caring for the earth is deeply connected to following Jesus. Through videos, reflection, scripture, and conversation, students will come to understand that their everyday choices impact not only the environment but also the most vulnerable among us. This is not just a lesson about science or activism—it’s about faith, responsibility, and living out the call to love “the least of these,” including the natural world that God has declared good.
Scripture – Matthew 25:34-40
Learn how climate change isn’t just about the environment. It’s also about justice, especially for communities that have been hit hardest over the years. The group will start by imagining what it was like for marginalized groups back in 1990, reading a powerful letter from that time, discussing fairness, and who gets to be heard. Along the way, they’ll examine what the Bible says about caring for those who are vulnerable and consider how faith relates to the real-world challenges people face today. Finally, participants will get a chance to use their own voices by writing letters about climate justice in their community. It’s all about understanding, empathy, and stepping up to make a difference together.
Scripture – Isaiah 58:6-8
Come to understand how nature ultimately knows how to heal itself. This is meant to challenge our notion of our role in healing our environment from climate change. It also helps youth to understand that we are not meant to do this alone, but in cooperation with nature. God calls us to this work not through self-preservation of our common home but in love for all created order. Youth will be given the opportunity to reflect on what that love looks like, its challenge to us, and the need to spread stories of hope that stem from that love.
Scripture – John 3:16-17
