Job Summary

Description

To develop and administer programs for the children of the church, titled Kids of the Kingdom, which includes: Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Children’s Sunday and Children’s Christmas Play and other special events the church may plan in the future for children.

Responsibilities

General

  • Work cooperatively with all staff and the Discipleship Ministry Team (DMT).
  • Communicate in a timely manner with volunteers.
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, DMT meetings, Curriculum Design meetings and any other meetings that may arise concerning educational programming for children.
  • Encourage and set an example of participation in Sunday school and worship of the church.
  • Fulfill Brenthaven’s Child Protection Policy
  • Maintain registration forms to include emergency information, allergies, phone numbers

Sunday School

  • Serve as an active member of the Curriculum Design Team (CDT) for the Workshop Rotation Model.
  • Oversee the Workshop Rotation Program (grades K-6th).
  • Provide curriculum and materials for the Nursery when requested.
  • Teach or secure teachers for all workshop classes.
  • Develop schedule for month’s workshops.
  • Review with AP or Pastor theological issues concerning any lessons.
  • Arrive by 9:00 a.m. on Sundays to unlock the doors and do last-minute preparations for all Rotation classes.
  • Arrange suitable rooms, equipment and supplies.

Children’s Programming

  • Plan all Kids of the Kingdom programs.
  • Secure trusted adult volunteers to assist you, being mindful that children do not need to be alone with an adult volunteer and that all children should be carefully supervised as stated in Brenthaven’s Child Protection policy.
  • Publicize events (including newsletters, church website and in worship) and maintain records of attendance.

Weekly Office Duties

  • Provide a monthly newsletter submission in rotation with other church leadership.
  • Stay in touch with all parents, returning communication in a timely manner with any questions about church activities that may have.
  • When possible or appropriate, attend activities that the children may be involved in, such as: school plays, sports games, etc. If one of the children under your care is sick and/or in the hospital, stay in touch with the parents and make visits to their home or hospital if possible.
  • Maintain supply rooms and storage areas in the Children’s Wing of the church.
  • Make sure the church building is locked and secure when office hours or children’s activities are completed.

Desired Skills

Qualifications:

  • Experience, training or formal education in Christian development of children and youth. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is preferred. Christian, theological or related education/training/experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrates strong commitment to the church with preference given to persons familiar with and committed to ministry within the Presbyterian/Reformed tradition.
  • Has good communication and relational skills in working with the entire congregation.
  • Demonstrates a love for and commitment to working with children, youth and their parents.

Benefits

  • Currently this is a part time position. 20 hours per week.
  • Hours are flexible but it is mandatory that this person be available during Sunday school and for KOK activities.
  • After six months of employment, one week of paid vacation is earned. At the end of one year of employment
    another week of paid vacation is earned.
