First United Methodist Church Georgetown is seeking a full-time Director of Student Ministries to lead and grow our vibrant ministry for students in middle school and high school. Our mission is to live out God’s love everywhere we go. Leading with grace, it is our desire for everyone to know they are beloved children of God. FUMC is proud to be a “big tent” United Methodist Church where all are welcome. The church currently averages around 500 in worship each Sunday between three services.
This is a key role for a passionate and relational leader who feels called to help students grow in their faith, build life-giving community, and serve others in the name of Christ. The Director will work closely with staff, volunteers, parents, and the broader church community to create environments where young people feel welcomed, known, and empowered to develop, explore and witness their faith.
Work Hours and Compensation
This is a full-time, salaried position. The nature of youth ministry involves evening and weekend work, as well as travel for mission trips and retreats. Weekly schedules will be flexible to reflect these demands while allowing for healthy boundaries and rest.
Key Responsibilities
● Lead all student ministry programming, including:
○ Weekly gatherings
○ Sunday school and small groups
○ Bible studies and spiritual formation experiences
○ Fellowship and special events
○ Mission trips and service projects
○ Seasonal retreats and camps
○ Teaching Confirmation
● Build and maintain strong relationships with students and their families—both inside and outside the church walls. This includes attending school events, games, performances, etc., as part of relational outreach.
● Recruit, train, and support adult volunteers to lead and mentor students.
● Work collaboratively with the church staff team to integrate student ministries into the wider life of the church.
● Oversee communication with parents, students, and volunteers through email, social media, and other tools.
● Manage ministry logistics including registration, budgeting, scheduling, and safety protocols.
● Serve as the primary spiritual leader for middle and high school students, modeling a Christ-centered life and offering pastoral care when needed.
Qualifications and Characteristics
The ideal candidate will be a committed Christian with a passion for student ministry and a strong understanding of adolescent development and faith formation.
Required:
● Strong, growing personal faith consistent with United Methodist theology and practice
● A demonstrated calling to student ministry
● Excellent relational, organizational, and communication skills
● Experience working with youth in a church or ministry setting (preferably 2+ years)
● Ability to connect with students, parents, and adult volunteers in a relational and pastoral way
● Technologically proficient and familiar with communication platforms and media
Preferred:
● Bachelor’s degree in ministry, education, or a related field (graduate work a plus)
● Familiarity with Ministry Safe and best practices in youth ministry
● Experience developing both large-group and small-group programs
Personal Characteristics:
● Spiritually mature, humble, and teachable
● Creative, energetic, and adaptable
● A team player who collaborates well with others
● Able to lead with both vision and attention to detail
● Enthusiastic about being a visible and engaged presence in the lives of students and families
The salary for this position is $56,500 plus individual health insurance. In addition, the church contributes 6% of the salary amount to a retirement account. No participation is required by the employee and amounts contributed are fully vested immediately. Benefits also include:
