Asbury United Methodist Church of Arnold

Part Time Youth Director

Job Summary

Description

Primary Function:
To serve as overseer of youth ministry so that the congregation may fulfill its mission as the body of Christ. Cultivate safe space in which youth can be the fullness of who God has created them to be, with a heart for social justice (fully inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community and advocating for racial reconciliation, justice, and equity).

Responsibilities

  1. Develop and lead programs according to the vision and purpose of the youth ministry. Meet weekly with the youth group during the academic year and at least 3 times during the summer.
    ● Create monthly outreach events.
    ● Plan at least bi-monthly spiritual growth programs, activities and events that include opportunities for youth to worship, fellowship with each other, study the Bible and apply it to their lives (spiritual growth).
    ● Plan at least quarterly service opportunities and a yearly week-long mission project in order to involve our youth in Christ-like service that impacts the lives of others (service and student leadership).
    ● Lead a Sunday Morning Small Group (bible study) during the academic year.
    ● In conjunction with the Lead Pastor, lead a Confirmation Program every other academic year. Confirmation includes a class that covers the entire academic year, a one on one mentoring program with youth and other adults in the congregation, holding monthly check-in meetings with parents and adult mentors during the program, and Confirmation Sunday.
  2. Communicate the vision and values of the youth ministry to all volunteers, staff, and student leaders.
  3. Recruit and regularly train volunteer leaders.
  4. Build and maintain quality relationships with parents and guardians.
    ● Clearly share the vision with parents and guardians so they understand the purpose of the youth ministry. Often the youth director is the main connection the parents and guardians have to Asbury.
    ● Create avenues of consistent contact with parents and guardians (weekly email, long range calendars, updating youth ministry page on Asbury’s website, frequent social media posts on official youth group accounts, annual parent meetings, semi-annual resourcing for parents and other interested persons about youth culture and how to best care for, protect, and disciple our youth).
    ● Provide opportunities for both congregants and parents/guardians to volunteer with youth programming.
    ● Maintain a relationship with Asbury’s Safe Sanctuary Coordinator to get adult volunteers required training and background checks to work with youth.
  5. Develop and oversee the youth ministry budget.
    ● Set a budget that reflects the values in the vision and purpose.
    ● Be prudent with finances, sticking with the approved budget.
  6. Meetings and Reports
    ● Attend regular meetings with the Senior Pastor every other week and provide regular updates on the status of goals and ongoing needs of youth and their families.
    ● Attend regular staff meetings with Church Staff every other week.
    ● Attend monthly church council meetings or provide monthly summaries on the status of youth ministry to the Church Council in advance of their meetings.
  7. Attend Sunday morning worship services during the academic year and at least twice per month during the summer.
